Simple, for me, also means more frugal, less wasteful, and less dependent on a store for my needs. I’m not a seamstress. I pretend I can sew. That boldness has gotten a lot of simple projects accomplished around the house. You see, sometimes if you figure you can wing it and come out with something half decent, it actually works! So, you see, you too can make your own cloth napkins 😉
A few months ago I wondered why I was still buying paper napkins. Yes! One more thing for me to eliminate from my shopping list!! Someone had given me a whole lot of material, so I rummaged through it and found a cute, checkered farm looking pattern and 20 minutes or so later – Homemade Cloth Napkins (Serviettes for those in the rest of the world).
*Note – if you are switching from paper to cloth, realize that you need to make more than just the number of family members you have. Make three to four times that amount so that you have something to use while the others are in the wash.
Step 1 – Choose Size and Cut
I took an already made cloth napkin to measure. You can also just open up a paper napkin, though these will be slightly smaller. I like the smaller size for every day use though. Here I used 18in. x 18in. My husband prefers others I have made before that are 24in. x 24in. so you may want to consider other people’s preferences before cutting.
Cut out however many you need for your family. Keep in mind that some will be in the laundry basket when you need them so make extra. I recommend 3-4x the number of family members.
Step 2 – Fold over Edges and Sew
I folded in the corners so they wouldn’t stick out (Don’t look too hard). I also used a decorative stitch.
Step 3 – Fold and enjoy
Wash as you would any other cloth napkins.
You can also put a ribbon around them and give them away.
These make pretty homemade gifts. Your friends will be happy to have something so nice, and will feel loved becuase you went to the effort to make them a gift.
