There has been a lot of attention given to young living essential oil blend labeled as Thieves. I have friends that have their hand soap in every room. It’s a great essential oil blend that has a long history for good reason! This thieves soap bar recipe takes on that tradition and brings you the organic cold process soap option to your fingertips.
Why is it Called Thieves Soap?
The story goes that 600 and more years ago, when the plague tore through Europe and Asia, thieves were known to pillage the dead bodies for anything worth stealing. They quickly learned that the bodies meant more death for the thieves or those who apprehended them.
Though there was a lack of understanding of internal processes and causes of many illnesses, it’s wrong to assume they didn’t know anything about the power of herbs and herbal remedies. According to multiple stories from multiple countries, even these thieves knew to combine herbs and use them on their bodies and masks in order to kill germs so they wouldn’t contract the plague or any other illness while touching the dead.
Thieves Soap Essential Oils
Essential oils, put simply, are oils removed from the oils of a plant. They are parts of a part of a plant! They are potent and should be treated so. To learn more about essential oil safety click here.
The most common essential oils used in this blend are:
I like to add frankincense as well. It is extremely anti-inflammatory, making it perfect for this blend.
I have a soap bar in my shop. Check it out here: Thieves Soap
These essential oils are chosen because they are antimicrobial, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and have even been shown to fight off MRSA (1). They make a dynamic and powerful blend.
What’s great about this soap is that you can keep it in your bathroom and kitchen as an antibacterial hand soap or you can use this recipe to make it into liquid hand soap. You’re in control and can make it multiple ways!
Organic Thieves Soap Recipe
This recipe makes 3 pounds of soap, or 12 four ounce bars, and has a superfat content of 10%.
When I make my own thieves soap, I like to add a swirl of activated charcoal and Moroccan clay. It seems to go with the history and name of the soap, plus the clay and charcoal adds extra cleansing and skin conditioning. You can feel free to leave the clay and charcoal out of this recipe. It won’t change the recipe.
