Allergy season has come early for us this year. We’ve had a very warm winter and where we usually don’t start feeling allergy symptoms until the end of April, and all through May. This year we’re already feeling it, making my extra research so that we can use essential oils for allergies right on time.
My daughter came home last night from a friend’s house where she had been hugging baby goats, kittens, playing with a dog, and riding a horse. I’m not sure exactly which one of those animals set her off, but it was probably a mixture that was particularly hard on her system as a combined front. In fact, it could have been grasses or trees that have begun to bloom.
Allergies are always changing. When your immune system is down because of lack of sleep, eating poorly, a recent illness, or being around a lot of allergens at once. You are much more likely to have a reaction then if you were well rested, eating well, and strong.
As a side note, the understanding that being exposed to minute amounts of allergens can train your body not to react as if those allergens were poison (hence allergy shots). If you are allergic to grasses and trees, one way to “build up a tolerance”, so to speak, is to eat honey from local bees. See more in Treat Your Allergies with Raw Honey.
Essential Oils for Allergies – 4 Blends
Why 4 Essential Oil Blends? Why not just one?
That’s simple. We are all so incredibly different. Our bodies respond differently to different substances and circumstances. That’s why your friend may rave about an herbal concoction that did absolutely nothing for you. That doesn’t mean your friend is nuts. It just means that his or her body responded to that stimulus, while yours did not.
Experiment with these blends. Smell each oil, one at a time. Do you like the smell? If you hate the scent or feel an aversion to it in any way, don’t use it. It sounds very…non-scientific and subjective. While it is subjective, it is in fact very scientific. There are so many chemical reactions and signals being sent throughout your body. We all know that scents can bring up memories, make us feel relaxed or energetic. All of this is because of our internal reactions at the molecular level. So pay attention to your initial reactions when it comes to scents!
Application Options
- Use a diffuser like this one by adding 3-4 drops of the blend.
- Add a few drops to a handkerchief, hold to nose and breath deeply. Repeat every 1-2 hours.
- Apply to chest. Dilute to a 2% dilution (1% for elderly, 0.5% for children). If using a 1 ounce bottle, add 12 drops of the essential oil blend and fill the rest of the bottle with a carrier oil like sweet almond oil or olive oil.
