I’m really encouraged to see so many options in the stores these days for a more natural deodorant choice, though finding a natural, detoxing, no baking soda deodorant recipe that really works can be a challenge. Even so, it seems that people are beginning to speak with their money and cause companies to step up and offer better choices. So encouraging!
What we DO have to watch for is sneaky ingredients. Always check that ingredient list, even if it’s a product that you’ve used one hundred times! They change often because of price changes or are bought out by other companies who change the ingredients but not the logo.
If you’ve not looked too far into ingredients yet, and are just starting on this journey toward a healthier life, then look through the website menu, because I have a lot of recipes with detailed instructions and reasons for making the switch.
Deodorant is an easy and very important switch.
We’ve been trained to think that sweating is bad and therefore antiperspirants are important. Antiperspirants will keep you from sweating, but are filled with toxic ingredients that will harm and put a tax on your body that you may not be able to afford. Learn more here.
Why no baking soda?
I’ve experimented with a lot of recipes.
Recipes with baking soda are King! I never stink with my detoxing deodorant recipe with baking soda. You can get that recipe HERE.
But, the problem is that many people are sensitive to baking soda. The particles are abrasive enough that it causes break outs and rashes that can be painful or itchy. My experience is about one out of ten people may have that issue. My husband is one. It’s very uncomfortable.
In trying to find a recipe that works for him, I’ve come up with something I absolutely love. I still think baking soda works better, BUT as far as I can determine, this is the best of the no baking soda versions.
Making the Recipe
This no baking soda deodorant recipe has a great balance of wax and oil so that your arm pits don’t feel waxy, but the growth of bacteria is slowed so that it takes longer for you to stink. After all, it’s not sweating that makes you stink; it’s the bacteria combined with proteins expelled by your pores that causes you to stink.

The Detox
The essential oils that are chosen for this deodorant are ones that naturally support your body’s effort to detox.
- Lemongrass is high in citral which can increase the activities of detoxification enzymes.
- Lemon has hesperidin, which some researchers traditional Ayurvedics believe fights against inflammation and oxidative stress.
- Rosemary has been shown to eliminate many types of free radicals. 3
- Valerian, Peppermint, and Myrrh are also known for iron chelation and anti-oxidation. These should definitely be considered in creating your own favorite scent.

I use this recipe all winter to give my skin a rest from the baking soda recipe I like to use during the summer. It’s a recipe that I got my finicky boys to try (since they wanted something that looks similar to store bought).
Feel free to use the essential oils that are in the recipe, or switch out one ore two for your favorites.
