Homemade Spray Sunscreen Recipe with Natural Ingredients

I got a number of emails this summer asking me to make them a spray sunscreen or give them a spray sunscreen recipe so they could make it themselves.

Actually, I have been using my natural sunscreen cream for years on myself and my family and it never occurred to me to make a spray version.

It makes sense to use your favorite cream recipe and liquefy it down enough to move through a sprayer. That wasn’t a problem. My concern was if it would give the same coverage or not.

Natural Sunscreen Spray Recipe by Simple Life Mom

Does it work?

A lot of people ask me if making your own sunscreen works. I am not a doctor, my recipe hasn’t been approved by the FDA, so take my words with that in mind. But there is also a lot of control and fear mongering going around, as well false information. I’m a very light skinned red head who burns after mere moments in the sun. Store bought sunscreens give me and my family intensely itchy rashes. I make my sunscreen lotion with non-nano zinc oxide and use it on myself and my family and it works. It’s that simple. No burning, no rashes.

Now, back to whether the spray would give the same amount of coverage. My son has been known to use a tiny dab of my lotion over his entire face, neck and shoulders and then wonder why he burns. You have to put it in like you mean it (The same goes for store bought, so no difference there).

Long story short, I tested this spray lotion and, when put on properly, it worked exactly the same as the cream lotion. It was super easy to spray.  My sprayer was more of a squirt than a spray, but it was really easy to spread out and I actually liked it better than the cream. I’m thinking I could squirt down my kids and have them rub it in rather then trust them to get that tiny dab that they try to spread over their entire bodies.

Natural Spray Sunscreen Recipe from Simple Life Mom

Non-Nano Zinc Oxide

There is no airborne zinc oxide after combined with liquid, so there is no worry in using it as a spray. I keep reading new articles to see if anything has changed, but studies are still showing that non-nano zinc oxide cannot penetrate the skin barrier, making it great for sun protection. Use a mask when mixing into the lotion so that any powder blown into the air while mixing is not inhaled.

Homemade Spray Sunscreen Recipe

There are other spray sunscreen recipes out there, but they require you to melt things down and all kinds of other unnecessary steps. This is simple and effective.

Makes: 8 ounces

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup shea butter
  • 1/3 cup fractionated coconut oil
  • 15 drops carrot seed essential oil
  • 10 drops myrrh essential oil
  • 2 tablespoon non-nano zinc oxide (optional) You can add more myrrh instead (up to 40 drops)

Directions:

  1. Place shea butter in a large bowl and whip with a stand mixer or hand mixer until smooth.
  2. Scrape shea butter from the sides and add the fractionated coconut oil, essential oils, and zinc oxide. Mix until smooth.
  3. Add to amber spray bottles. Keep in a cool, dark place between uses. Lasts up to 6 months.

Use fractionated coconut oil, not regular coconut oil so that the mixture can be sprayed. Add more if you nozzle is smaller and needs a thinner mixture. This recipe doesn’t cover like the cream sunscreen so make sure to reapply very often. This is not FDA approved, so use at your own risk.

Below is the recipe in print format. Enjoy!

In terms of skin and the sun, no others really, but you can always add a few drops of others along with these to alter the scent.

If you had a guess, what spf would this sunscreen be? I am looking to make around a 15 spf.
Would you use this on your face or would you use the lotion?

It is a lower spf than the lotion, but it sounds like that’s what you’re looking for.

Hi. Do I need to add more carrot seed and zinc, for a higher SPF? I’m looking for at least 45 SPF. Also can I add a few drops of castor oil or is it too thick for the spray?

I think you can add the castor oil. I’d add more non nano zinc oxide if you want a higher spf. I don’t know what the number that the recipe gives you.

You can. The spf that liquid coconut oil can give you is low anyway. Changing it to almond oil will not make much of a difference.

I have thin hair and want to make my own natural sunscreen to protect my scalp. Is this something that is sheer enough that it will blend into hair or is it thick and white like most sunscreens?

Depending on your hair color, this may work. It does have zinc oxide which is white, but the liquid consistency thins it enough that you should be able to rub it in without it being very white.

    Hi there,
Your recipe sounds wonderful. I’m so excited to try it! However I am incredibly fair, so I’m trying to make a 50-70 spray sunscreen for every day summer use. Can I add more of any ingredient to make it more potent? Thank you!

It would lose some of its coating qualities. It would also have to be a whole new process and you’d have to adjust the recipe. Because real cacao is hard you’d have to met it first and whip as it cools and then adjust for hardness by adding more oils so that it sprays.

the raspberry seed oil and myrrh and carrot essential oils are very nourishing oils that help to protect and heal skin. Myrrh has been used in this way for thousands of years.

I didn’t see the raspberry seed oil listed on the recipe and was wondering if it could be used in place of the carrot seed oil but still adding the myrrh. I read that raspberry seed oil has the highest SPF count of all essential oils and they said that carrot seed oil doesn’t. Thanks for doing this recipe!

A lot of things are passed around the internet without people actually doing research. Raspberry seed oil, carrot oil, myrrh all make a great combination to protect and heal skin that is effected by the sun. They don’t have high blocking properties but their healing is what makes them important to the recipe. Raspberry seed oil makes a great addition and you can definitely add it to your recipe.

I do. It’s white so you should be able to see if there’s any residue left. I hand wash with straight dish soap, little to no water to get the most off, then wash as usual.

It is coconut oil that has some of the mtc oil removed so that more solids remain. It stays harder at higher temperatures.

Do you use shea butter lotion or cream in this recipe? I used lotion and my results were kind of lumpy. I am photosensitive to the sun which I have just developed so I need something I can use often without hurting my skin and I was so excited when I found your recipes.

Shea butter is used in the ingredients. You need to blend the shea butter before adding additional oils.

Grapeseed would not work as well according to its properties. Zinc oxide is ground to a very fine powder, or left at a more course (non-nano) stage. The non-nano zinc oxide has larger particles and does not enter your bloodstream as easily (Very important!).

You can use those oils. If you are adding the zinc-oxide, then that is the main ingredient to include for skin protection. Other oils add some protection and healing, but if you are going to vary those then I would rely more on the zinc and that can be added to any lotion. Just make sure it can by thinned enough to spray by mixing in more oils if necessary.

No problem. It could be the sprayer you are using. Some are super fine. Just add a little coconut oil to make it thin enough to spray. You don’t want to add too much to throw off the ratios, but a little is fine.
