This Natural Age Spot Serum Recipe is built upon the understanding that “age spots” are caused by 3 main reasons, though there are also unknown causes for certain skin conditions like Vitiligo.
To learn more about what age spots or liver spots are, see my article What are Age Spots?
I have been using this recipe and selling bottles of it in my shop for a few years now.
My personal testimony is that I have used it a few times for different spots that have come up. I am a red head with blue eyes, putting me in the most dangerous category for skin. Over a few weeks of use on two specific spots, one lightened much faster than the other and disappeared, while the other lightened, but never went away.
Since then I’ve also used it on an itchy spot on the bridge of my nose. I had a dermatologist tell me that the area had damaged skin, but it “wasn’t something to worry about yet.” When it starts to become itchy I use this blend on it and it goes away for many months before returning. I’m going to start applying myrrh to it neat and see if that gets rid of it permanently, especially since there is so much skin cancer in my family.
Note: I am not a doctor and my comments have not been approved by the FDA.
My recipes are based on my research and experience. My understanding is that there are different types of damage and to different depths.
The Ingredients:
Rosehip Seed Oil – Rosehip seed oil is great for nurturing the skin. It soaks in and does not leave you greasy (great for if you want to add makeup afterwards). It has traditionally been used in skin lightening recipes because of its high fatty acid content. I can’t think of another carrier oil that would be better for this task.
Lemon Essential Oil – lemon is known to be lightening to the skin. Lemon essential oil is more concentrated than any lemon juice, so do not apply it neat (without diluting) to the skin or it can burn or cause sun sensitivity.
Grapefruit Essential Oil – grapefruit essential oil is known for its anti-bacterial uses and is often added to homemade household cleaners. It is also used as a gentle antibiotic for babies, or even as a cure for mastitis. It is rich in vitamin C, making it great for the skin.
Frankincense Essential Oil – frankincense essential oil is one of my favorite oils. You’ll be hearing a lot about it in the next year, because a number of Universities have been completing research on its incredible power. The findings have been amazing! I love it when the “professionals” back up what we’ve known for years. I actually say that in all honesty, because it means that more people will take notice and start looking into natural health for themselves.
Red Thyme Essential Oil – another one of my favorites, red thyme is very a very potent essential oil. It has one of the highest antioxidant levels among herbs.1 It increases blood flow to an area, raising your body’s ability to heal that particular area. It is high in phenols.
Phenols are a natural part of the oil that your liver must process. This is why I state that this formula should be used for a period of time and then discontinued for a time.
It is an amazing oil, and a great example of how essential oils are more complex then we may think when first trying them.
Myrrh Essential Oil – Myrrh is dark and thick, because it is literally a tree sap. We’ve used myrrh straight on diagnosed skin cancer with amazing results. Like I mentioned above, a number of people in my family have skin cancer. My parents have both used myrrh and watch their skin spots shrink. They also had those spots removed and continued to care for it with herbs, with no return.
But my grandmother became too old to have spots removed. Instead, they used myrrh and watched the spot shrink and disappear. I think they should have continued application for a long time afterwards, but they did not and the spots eventually grew back. But the application of myrrh was a HUGE help for my grandmother.
Age Spot Serum with Essential Oils
Keep this serum in a dark glass bottle to preserve the oils.
This recipe makes 15ml or 0.5 ounces.
Ingredients:
- 15 ml Rose Hip Seed Oil
- 10 drops Lemon Essential Oil
- 10 drops Frankincense Essential Oil
- 6 drops Grapefruit Essential Oil
- 5 drops Red Thyme Essential Oil
- 5 drops Myrrh Essential Oil
Use 1-2 drops on a spot once to twice daily for up to 2 months. It will take weeks to see changes begin, though some have told me they saw big changes after just one week. After the 2 months of use, discontinue use for 2 months so that your liver can rid itself of the phenols from the thyme.

Want to try it out before you make it? You can find it in My Shop.
Caution
Essential oils are serious business! They are powerful and complex.
Photosensitivity
Cold pressed lemon oil is photo-toxic, while steam distilled is not. Steam distilled lemon essential oil is super hard to find, so make sure you wear a natural sunscreen over the applied area.
Red Thyme and Phenol
As stated above, red thyme is higher in phenols than some other essential oils. It is valuable enough that I would choose to use it every time I see the need. But I would not use it for more than 6-8 weeks because your body must deal with the phenols and excrete them through the liver.
Visiting the Doctor/Pregnancy
Always see a dermatologist about any skin conditions. Even if you disagree with some of their methods to fix the problem, the fact is that a good dermatologist really knows what they are talking about. Some even know about essential oils. Mine actually praised me for what I was able to do for my skin. So don’t hesitate to ask your doctor about any skin concerns.
Also ask your doctor before using any essential oil serums if you are pregnant.
How it Works
These oils were chosen with the understanding that sun spots (a.k.a. liver spots, age spots, etc) are sun damage or your skin responding to some damage in some way.
This serum will help your body heal and the area to lighten. This takes time as the essential oils cause your system to target that area. Once the damaged skin cells are healed, the protective melanin layer will need to fade. Your body shouldn’t replenish the darker melanin layer because the skin cells are healed.
