Sunburn Relief Spray Ingredients
I’ve chosen ingredients that I know help the skin. I used them growing up, and have used them with my kids over the past few years as well.
I’m giving you two different recipes, because there are some great ingredients that don’t mix well: oil and water. It’s important to hydrate sunburned skin, but combining water based ingredients like aloe and vinegar with oil based ingredients like coconut oil aren’t ideal for sprays. You can shake very vigorously each time, but the two spray option actually gives the first time to take action before adding the second.
You won’t find witch hazel in this spray. It is highly astringent, which can be helpful to strengthen skin when the sunburn isn’t too bad or near healing. But for an after sun spray, witch hazel should only be used carefully.
Other ingredients to avoid are alcohols. Alcohols with dry out the skin prematurely and cause excess peeling.
Ingredients to Use:
Aloe Vera – The Auxin and Gibberellins within aloe vera liquid help heal wounds and are highly anti-inflammatory, making it ideal for this spray.
Apple Cider Vinegar – Raw Apple cider vinegar contains acetic acid, which helps reduce itching, inflammation, and pain. It also is acidic, helping to bring up the lowered pH of the skin to normal levels.
Calendula – Calendula has been used traditionally on wounds for hundreds of years, if not more. Pharmacological studies reveal that C. officinalis exhibits antibacterial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor and antioxidant properties. Obviously, it’s a great herb to use in the case of a sunburn. You can easily get some here.
Raw Honey – Raw Honey is a humectant. This means that it traps moisture from the air onto your skin. Sunburned skin can easily dry out. The addition of honey helps to ensure that your kin stays hydrated.
Lavender Essential Oil – Lavender essential oil is a very traditional herb to use for soothing skin. The reason being that it is very mild and can be used on children, elderly, and pregnant moms. It is also very effective in calming the skin.
Fractionated Coconut Oil – Fractionated Coconut oil is high in lauric acid, which is antibacterial and antimicrobial. It’s a very light oil. It will not weigh down the damaged skin, but will allow breathability.
