2 Allergy Relief Soap Recipes – Vegan Option

I’ve been working hard to boost my immune system this year and it has definitely been paying off. My allergies are much better this spring so far. I still get itchy eyes and sneeze occasionally and so do my children, so I thought I’d go ahead and create an aromatherapy allergy relief soap recipe so that when they need to shower and open up their sinuses they can get some extra relief by the soap they are using.

2 Allergy Relief Soap Recipes - Cold Process Soap recipe from Simple Life Mom

Essential Oils for Allergies

Allergies are always changing. When your immune system is down because of lack of sleep, eating poorly, a recent illness, or being around a lot of allergens at once. You are much more likely to have a reaction then if you were well rested, eating well, and strong.

We are all different. One essential oil may not be as effective for your allergies as another one. There are a few essential oils that are commonly known to give most people great relief. Smell each one of them when you are having some allergy issues and see which ones are more calming, open up nasal passages, and calm irritated eyes and nose.

Essential Oils that can help:

  • peppermint
  • lavender
  • lemon
  • basil
  • eucalyptus
  • tea tree
  • bergamot
  • lemongrass

My personal favorite is the combination of peppermint, lavender, and lemon. These are the essential oils I’ve used in the recipe below, but feel free to interchange them for one of the other essential oils in the same total quantity.

Allergy Relief Soap Recipe with Tallow

This is a cold process soap recipe that makes 12 four ounce bars. If you are unfamiliar with how to make cold process soap, get more detailed instructions here or get my book, Natural Soapmaking Book for Beginners. I also have an ebook Natural Soap Making: How to and Recipe Book.

Makes: 12 four ounce bars

Superfat: 10%

Ingredients:

  • 10 ounces tallow or lard
  • 8 ounces coconut oil
  • 5 ounces olive oil
  • 5 ounces grapeseed oil
  • 5 ounces sweet almond oil
  • 1 ounce beeswax
  • 4.4 ounces lye
  • 11 ounces water
  • 0.25 ounces lemon essential oil
  • 0.5 ounces peppermint essential oil
  • 0.5 ounces lavender essential oil

Directions:

  1. Weigh all ingredients and set aside. In a large pot, add tallow, coconut oil, olive oil, grapeseed oil, sweet almond oil, and beeswax and heat on low until everything is melted. Allow to cool to 90 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Put on protective eye gear and gloves and go outside. Carefully mix lye into water.  Allow to cool to around 90 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. Prepare the mold by lining if necessary.
  4. When lye water and oil are both around 90 degrees, pour lye water into large pot of oils and blend with a hand mixer until light to medium trace.
  5. Add essential oils and blend until incorporated.
  6. Pour into mold. Cover and insulate for 24 hours.
  7. Remove soap from mold. If it seems too soft to remove, wait another 6 hours and recheck. Cut the soap into 12 four ounce bars and allow to cure in a well ventilated location for 4-6 weeks.

    Hia

    Thanks for the great recipes
I’ve made soap before but not a shampoo bar

So I was wondering do you have a more simple version that doesn’t need so many different oils? Is there a reason for having so many different ones I guess it’s for a reason but can I get away with less and cheaper ones to start off with?

Thanks so much for the inspiration!

Shampoo bars have a lot of different oils for a reason, but a great body bar can be made with only a few. The proportions are important so that it is moisturizing and not drying to the skin while cleansing. Some people do well with a basic tallow, coconut, and olive oil bar on their hair. A lot of people don’t though. The type of water you have (hard or soft) makes a big difference.

Hi Kelly, I am fairly new to soapmaking. I have your book and made the first allergy recipe. I used all the same oils and essential oils, but after about a week of curing the soap almost has no scent. Could this be from something I’m doing during the soap making process?

It shouldn’t be that light. I’m guessing it’s the quality of the oils that you used. Seal the batch in an airtight container to help retain the rest of the scent or rebatch and add more.

Babassu can be replaced with coconut oil. You can use sweet almond instead of apricot kernel oil. The essential oil combination that you use will effect the ability of the soap to help you, but use what you can and have.

Good morning Kelly, my absolute favorite soap recipe is the Allergy Relief Bar from your “Natural Soapmaking Book for Beginners. I have made it many times, but always have the same problem. It cracks and crumbles when cutting it. I read that it may have too much lye, can you help? I want to make again and get it right this time!

The recipe is correct for the lye amount. My guess is that it’s not too much lye, but that your soap is too cold so that it can’t saponify properly and is cracking. Are you insulating the mold? Make sure your initial temperatures are around 80 at the least. You may want to saponify closer to 95-100, then insulate well with blankets or towels if you keep your house very cool.
