Natural Hair Growth Oil Recipe

The fight for long, luscious and thick hair has been going on for centuries. There have been thousands of tonics, brews, chemical concoctions, or even “old wife’s tales” to make a person jump through hoops in order to promote natural hair growth. A natural hair growth oil recipe is not new, but our understanding of why certain ingredients are chosen has increased greatly.

We now understand more about the growth and hibernation of hair follicles, the opening and closing of the hair shaft and what effects or strengthens this action. We can now combine this knowledge and come up with a natural hair growth oil recipe that actually helps most people see a huge difference in their hair.

Natural Hair Growth Oil Recipe from Simple Life Mom

Before we Begin: The Dos and Don’t

There are a lot of reasons why you or a friend of yours may be looking for a natural hair growth oil:

  1. We may style and color our hair until it is broken, thin, and basically a damaged mess.
  2. Others may have a health issue that has caused their hair to thin or has caused significant hair loss, this includes medications that cause hair thinning or hair loss.
  3. Still others may have poor eating habits. If you are not healthy in body, you will not have healthy, beautiful hair.
  4. Lastly, we cannot forget that genetics play a huge role! If your mom has thin hair, there’s a good chance you may too. If male pattern baldness is in your family, you may genetically be turning off hair follicle growth and all external action will not help.

You will need to look into your causes and make any changes you can to improve your health and the health of your hair.

What you should be doing:

  1. Eat healthy! This is huge! Consume a good amount of vegetables, proteins and fats so you can produce natural oil for your hair and keep your growth cycle going on schedule.
  2. Drink a lot of water.
  3. Massage your scalp gently to increase circulation.
  4. Exercise to increase blood flow.

Oils on Hair

I want this article to focus on the actual recipe, but I have to give you a super brief understanding of why these oils were chosen. No matter what the issue is as to why your hair is lacking luster or thickness (poor eating habits, over styling), there are certain oils that are more readily absorbed into the hair shaft than others.

Having oils penetrate the hair shaft is good. It helps to keep the hair shaft from being too porous and keep a balance between oil and water, strengthening the hair and preventing breakage. Oils that penetrate hair very well are oils like:coconut oil, palm kernel oil, castor oil, avocado oil, olive oil.

Other oils are known to not be able to penetrate the hair shaft. These are used more sparingly, but some believe it’s good to use these for occasionally providing an outer coating to the hair: jojoba oil or rice bran oil.

Essential Oils on the Scalp

The goal with using essential oils is not to cure baldness, but to help stimulate growth of healthy hair follicles.  You want the pores to stay lubricated, healthy, and unclogged. Increasing circulation and making sure they stay hydrated is very important. Certain essential oils are known to do these very things: cypress, peppermint, cedarwood, and rosemary essential oils(traditionally).

Equipment

  • 1 2oz dropper bottle

Ingredients

  • 2 Tbsp Fractionated Coconut Oil
  • 1 Tbsp Avocado Oil
  • ½ Tbsp Castor Oil
  • 1 tsp Jojoba oil
  • 2 drops cypress essential oil
  • 2 drops cedarwood essential oil or peppermint essential oil
  • 2 drops rosemary essential oil

Instructions

  • Combine all oils in a 2 oz dropper bottle
2 Tbsp Fractionated Coconut Oil, 1 Tbsp Avocado Oil, 1/2 Tbsp Castor Oil, 1 tsp Jojoba oil, 2 drops cypress essential oil, 2 drops cedarwood essential oil, 2 drops rosemary essential oil
  • SCALP APPLICATION: Apply a few drops to the scalp in various placed beneath your hair using the dropper and massage into the scalp. Leave on for 20-30 minutes (or longer if you can) and then wash hair normally. Be careful not to use too much if you use natural shampoos as it will make it harder to get the oil out.
  • HAIR PROTECTION: After washing, apply to damp hair on the ends by placing a few drops into your hand, rubbing your hands together, and then applying to the ends of your hair, working your way up as you go. You only need a few drops! You can then style your hair as you normally would.
  • STYLING and DEFRIZZING: Place a few drops onto your hands, rub your hands together and then lightly comb your fingers through your hair, careful to not focus on just one area. After most of the oil is off of of your hands, brush your hair or scrunch it with your hands. You will get a smooth and shiny finish. The key is to learn how much to use. Start with a tiny amount and build from there.

Maria, You need to ask your doctor. My first thoughts are hormone changes, diet changes, and products you use on your hair. All of these or each one can change the thickness and growth of your hair.

No, it is an oil and it would leave your hair very oily if you left it in and applied daily.

I would encourage you to investigate why you are having these changes. Hormones? Diet? This oil can help nourish your scalp and hair, but if there is an underlying health issue, it will not make up for that. Many blessings to you as you try to figure it out.

I don’t recommend using essential oils on babies. Their liver and other organs can have a hard time dealing with the strength. A carrier oil like apricot, sweet almond, or avocado are great for nourishing their scalp without the need of essential oils (as long as there’s no allergy).

It can definitely help with the external issues that go along with hair loss. Unfortunately, hair lose is mostly caused by internal changes like thyroid problems, lack of protein, iron deficiency to name a few. This oil will help stimulate working hair follicles for stronger and rapid growth. A good scalp massage along with the oil is a great combination.

It would probably be fine, but leaving on that long probably wouldn’t make more of a difference then if you just left it on for 20 minutes.

Always do research on essential oils for children. The carrier oils are fine. There’s a ton of ridiculous information out there so make sure you look on national aromatherapy sites for more accepted research.

As stated above, the oil is to stimulate your own processes. Everyone is going to respond differently, depending on the health of the total body and how fast your hair usually grows.

is it cheaper to make up your recipe oneself, or to buy your ready made up one? I would have to buy most of the ingredients, so I might land up with too much of some and not enough of another?

Most of these ingredients can be used for a lot of other projects so I guess it depends on how much you want to make and what other recipes you can use the ingredients in. If it’s one item you want to try, then you can always try it out from my shop (https://simplelifemom.com/shop). Otherwise, go for it and make it at home.

Apply a needed. 3-4 times a week may cause sensitivities to the essential oils so be aware and proceed with that in mind. Oily hair my result as well. You can make a substitute between the two castor oils.

The carrier oil is what will become rancid. If you make it in bulk then you need to make sure it is kept airtight and in a dark location. This will extend the life. Most of these types of mixtures will still go bad within 6 months.

You can definitely add rose petals. Rose is great for the hair and even dried petals can add nutrients.
You’ll have to test how often you’ll use the oil. I use it once a week, but I have friends who use a small amount daily.

Yes, about 6 months, depending on how sterile it is kept. .
You may not have to wash it out. It depends on your hair and its needs. If you are more concerned about the scalp, you can just use a little on the finger tips and massage into the scalp. If you would like to condition the hair, then I would spread a light layer on your hands and gentle spread throughout hair without getting large amounts in one area.

I am not a medical professional so I can only gibe you my experience. It can help with hair loss from dryness, low circulation and other skin or hair problems, but won’t reverse male pattern baldness. Results will vary person to person. It should be accompanied with good nutrition and higher mineral and vitamin levels (especially zinc and b’s)
