Today, I partnered with Andrea at PlusVoucherCode to give you some great ideas that will put the DIY into your Christmas decorating, while making sure to keep it classy while keeping the budget low. She’s bringing us 10 Christmas decorating ideas on a budget that I especially love because of the memories and family time they create.

10 Christmas Decorating Ideas on a Budget from Simple Life Mom

So without further ado, here’s Andrea:

Delicious eggnogs, home-made warm gingerbread man and sweet pumpkin pie. These are just some of the things that make Christmas so unique. Besides lip-smacking food, a huge part of the celebration involves decorating the house with trees, mistletoes, wreaths and lights in order to create a festive atmosphere and contribute to the holiday cheer.

Unfortunately, when you go shopping for them, decorations end up draining your bank account. You add a fairy light here and a Santa figurine there and before you know it you’ve crossed your budget.

You can always try and save a bit on your groceries, but fret not. Christmas decorations need not be expensive. Some of them can be made at home even if you don’t have a knack for arts and crafts.

Here are 10 Christmas decorating ideas on a budget:

Create Your Own Mistletoe

Why buy mistletoe when you can make one? Simply use a mistletoe template online, trace it on a sheet of green felt using a fabric pencil, cut it out using a sharpie, hot glue the stems together, add pearl embellishments with hot glue and tie a large red ribbon on the bunched stems to create a hanger. Presto! You’ve made a DIY mistletoe.

Shimmering Pine Cones

One the simplest Christmas decoration ideas is creating gold pinecones by simply dipping them in the gold paint either partially or wholly. If you aren’t comfortable with gold paint, you can dip the pinecones in a blend of water, glue and gold glitter. Then put the shimmering pine cones in bowls or baskets and place them on your table.

Use Mason Jars To Light Up The Driveway

Want your guests to be greeted with something warm and inviting on Christmas? Take note of this cheap Christmas decorations: Fill a couple of mason jars with Epsom salt to create faux snow and add small candles inside it. Place these mason jars along your entry way all the way to your front door. Light up all the candles on Christmas Eve. Nothing says welcome home like glowing candles.

Convert Pillows To Presents

Throw pillows can also help create a festive look in your house. Simply tie a red or green bow around them to make them look like Christmas presents. Bonus points if you can cover these pillows with red or green pillow covers and tie them with a contrasting bow color (think green bow over a red pillow).

Reuse Christmas Cards

Don’t you just love Christmas cards? Some of those have such amazing drawings on them that it’s hard to throw them away! So don’t throw them away. Instead, cut the drawings or paintings out and use double-sided tape to stick them on your fridge. You can also add several cutout drawings to a large mat board and use it to decorate a tree, doorway or wall.

You don’t have to be a skilled origami expert to implement this little Christmas decorating ideas on a budget.

Easy Twine Star Decoration

Okay, this requires you to be more hands-on but it’s worth it. For less than $10, you can make a large twine star decoration that can be hung outside your door.

First, create a star pattern using 10 wood sims. Make sure each sim overlaps the other and apply wood glue to hold them in place. Let it rest for two hours and use weights to press the wood pieces together.

After you’ve created the star pattern, use twine to wrap the frame. Start with one end of the star and keep going till the whole frame is neatly wrapped up. Dab some hot glue at the back of the star to hold it in place.

Once you’ve reached the end, tie a loop at the center. This loop can be used to hang the star. Now just hang it on your door. See? Easy-peasy.

Make Floating Candles

The list of cheap Christmas decorations is incomplete without floating candles. For this hack, you just need a clear vase or bottle, food coloring and floating candles. Fill half of the clear vase with water, add a few drops of holiday-themed food coloring (red or green), add floating candles inside and light them up. Line a few of these inside or outside your house.

Use Old Wine Bottles

We all have old wine bottles lying around the house. So why not put them to good use? Use acrylic red, white or green paint to paint the bottles. With a white bottle, you can hot glue three black buttons, don a small piece of red fabric on the nozzle and add a mini hat to create a snowman. Or add a miniature Santa cap to a red painted wine bottle. Get creative.

Old Light Bulbs

Reuse old light bulbs by stuffing them with white glitter or paint penguins on them. You can even paint large plastic bulbs with chalkboard paint, dry it out and then write “happy holidays” or “Merry Xmas” on them using white chalk. The possibilities are endless!

Convert A Plastic Deer Toy Into A Holiday Decoration

Christmas decorating ideas on a budget would be incomplete without this little clever use of plastic deer toys. Just take a deer figurine, apply glue all over it using a brush, pour silver glitter over it while it’s still wet and shake off any excess glitter. Let it rest for a while. Now place the silver deer on your table.

Pro tip: For a truly dazzling effect, use German glass glitter instead of the plain one.

So now that you have these DIY and easy Christmas decoration ideas, it’s time to get your hands dirty and keep your pocket light. Involve the family in creating these decorations. Kids love a good arts and crafts project. Not to mention, it keeps them occupied and teaches them the value of money.

Merry Christmas!
