Christmas and the whole holiday season make this the season for handmade gifts.  Organic soaps make a very nourishing gift idea. Christmas brings up memories of certain earthy scents like cinnamon and clove, foods like peppermint and citrus, or warm scents like vanilla and sandalwood.  You can make great gifts by combining scents that you love that remind you of special memories you have from this time of year, and make some of these Christmas soap recipes as gifts.

6 Christmas Soap Recipes

Candy Cane Soap

Makes 3 pounds or 12- 4oz bars

5% Superfat, 35% water percentage

Ingredients:

  • 16 ounces tallow
  • 12 ounces olive oil
  • 8 ounces coconut oil
  • 12. 6 ounces water
  • 5 ounces lye
  • 1. 25 ounces peppermint essential oil
  • 2 teaspoons Kaolin rose clay

Directions:

  1. Prepare mold. Line with wax paper if necessary.
  2. Heat oils and fat in a large pot until melted. Cool to 110 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. Wearing appropriate safety equipment (see safety guidelines), go outside and add the lye to the water and stir until dissolved. Let cool until it is around 110 degrees Fahrenheit.
  4. When both oils and lye water are at desired temperatures, pour lye water into oils and use a stick blender to blend on and off until light trace.
  5. Add essential oil and blend.
  6. Remove 1/2 cup soap and mix in Kaolin rose clay with a whisk.
  7. Pour main batch into prepared mold. When main batch is at medium trace so that red stays on the top instead of sinking in, swirl the Moroccan clay into the soap by pouring in parallel lines up and down the batch. Insert a dowel rod to the bottom and pull soap in a perpendicular motion back and forth in the mold until pink swirl/stripes are made.
  8. Cover and insulate for 24 hours. Remove from mold and allow to cure for 4-6 weeks.

Hello! Can I use lard instead of tallow? Can I also add Vitamin C Ascorbic Acid to the soap?

Yes to both. Lard and tallow are pretty much the easiest 1:1 switch you can make in soap making.

Hi! I’ve been looking high and low on the internet to find the safe usage rate for nutmeg essential oil in cp soap without any luck. I see you used nutmeg ( my favorite scent!) in one of your recipes. Maybe you can help a gal out? Thanks so much!

I would still consider it a hot oil, just not like oregano or clove. I use 0.75 ounce of essential oil per pound. Personally, I would use up to 50% of that with nutmeg.

What brand of Tallow do you recommend? I am having a hard time finding grass-fed organic as recommended in your book. Thanks!

You probably won’t find one labeled organic, but if you find something saying grass fed and finished that will be great. The easiest way to go is to ask a butcher or a beef cattle farm. They can often set aside lard for you to render when they send cows to the butcher.
