Anti Aging Face Bar – an Easy Cold Process Soap

I recently realized that I hadn’t given you my Anti Aging Face Bar Recipe. I’ve been selling it in My Shop for months now and it’s been super popular. It’s a nourishing face bar. Meaning, it cleanses gently without over stripping. It is also full of essential oils that are great for aging skin. This soap first came together at the request of someone who wanted the same or similar oils in a face bar that I use in my Anti Aging Serum.

Anti Aging Face Bar Recipe with essential oils by Simple Life Mom

A good face bar cold process soap recipe is going to account for facial skin’s needs for a more gentle and moisturizing soap bar. I’ve had some soap makers tell me that soap is soap and you can’t make it moisturizing or provide more nutrients and it’s just not true.

You can definitely formulate a face bar with a higher superfat value (the amount of oils left over after saponification) so that your bar is not drying to the skin.

You can also formulate the recipe so that you are using oils with high vitamin A ad E values, etc. so that you naturally support the skin with the oils that are leftover. By using the phrase “Anti Aging Face Bar Recipe”, I am not saying I have invented a bar that will reverse aging, but I am saying that it will be more nourishing, gentle, and provide helpful nutrients for young to aging skin that needs extra bonuses from essential oils, vitamin A and vitamin E.

You can learn more about how to make cold process soap here on my blog: 7 Easy Steps to Homemade Soap for Beginners. Or, you can buy my book on Amazon: The Natural Soapmaking Book for Beginners.

Essential Oils Used:

These essential oils have been in numerous studies that have shown that they have many wonderful properties. I’ve listed a few of those properties here to give you a basic understanding of their benefits.

  • Carrot Seed Essential Oil: revitalizing and toning
  • Frankincense Essential Oil: anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antiseptic, astringent.
  • Geranium Essential Oil: balances oils, mildly works to reduce acne, eczema, scarring and dry skin
  • Myrrh Essential Oil: reduces inflammation
  • Lavender Essential Oil: gentle anti-viral and antibacterial
  • Lemon Essential Oil: helps to cleanse and revitalize skin

Anti Aging Face Bar Recipe

This recipe has 15% superfat. It does not use any animals fats, but is still a wonderful face bar because of the nourishing butters and oils that are added.

This makes 12 -four ounce bars, or 3 pounds.

I called this an easy cold process soap recipe, and it is because it doesn’t have any special coloring or design. Just follow the directions and combine and mix. You can make this! If you want to purchase some first, then try it in my shop.

Just a quick question: I know that these are basic directions, but don’t you need to ‘cure’ the bars for several weeks before use? These instruction make it sound like you can use the bars after 24 hours…
This will probably be the first recipe that I try!

Have never tried making soap–my husband actually did years ago! Because of the lye, he bought old pots/utensils he never used again for other cooking purposes . Looks from your video that you use a sturdy everyday stockpot and stick blender. Do they safely clean up for you to use for family cooking afterwards?

I make soap often, so I have separate pots and utensils. If I do use something for soapmaking I will wash it and then run it through the dishwasher. It gets very clean that way.

I absolutely LOVE your shampoos and soaps. I used to have very damaged ends and no matter how much conditioner I used, they were as dry and brittle as hay. Your Luxury Shampoo Bar leaves my hair feeling so soft (without being greasy, which is a plus!) and it completely reversed the damage. Thank you!!! I am definitely a customer/follower for life.

From what I’ve read, Fragrance oils are more difficult to work with in cold process soap. Essential oils work well with both. Both are added toward the end, right before moving your soap to the mold.

    Hi,

I made this soap, but messed up by using the wrong butter. I don’t think the soap will harden, as it has been 2 days and it’s still very soft and sticky. I want to try to turn it into liquid soap and use in the shower. Would I still have to wait for it to cure for 4-6 weeks before turning it into liquid? Thanks, Cindy

What’s the superfat % for your anti-aging face bar? Also, if I wanted to use all Shea butter and leave out the cocoa butter, are these interchangeable or would I need more or less Shea butter?

    • Kelly

The superfat content is at 15%.
You can use 5 oz of shea butter instead of 1oz shea and 4 of cocoa. Sometimes a high shea content can make the bar a little slimy feeling, but that would be at 14% of the oil content and I think it should be ok.

I made this soap, left it in the mold for a few WEEKS as it was still too sticky to take out. finally I put it in the freezer, it came right out of the mold frozen. after curing for 6 more weeks, it is FANTASTIC! if you are using a silicone mold, it will likely be very hard to get out of the mold without freezing as its 15% superfatted.

Hi, I m trying to figure out the cleansing value for mature skin. in your recipe it is 19, the SF is 15. is this for balancing the formula? high superfat and high cleansing value could be similar to normal SF…5% and low cleansing value…10, let s say? thank you!

The higher superfat in this recipe is because it is meant for the face, which can easily become dry with all of the washing and wear and tear on our faces. Yes, you do want to balance cleansing with leaving enough oils to not over strip the skin, but there’s more to it than that. The oils chosen can add different vitamins and minerals that can also effect the end result of the skin.

I just tried this anti-aging facial soap recipe tonight. The soap was so creamy when making it. I left it without any coloring and it looks so natural. I got it in a round mold and then put some in tiny mini donut molds for guests and my teen grand-kids. I just can’t wait to try one of the bars. Such a easy recipe and just love the texture. Question for you… Carrot oil is a natural, and very effective, sunscreen. Have you noticed if the little bit you’re using in essential oil is enough to help protect your face at all? I was going to order some and use it as an oil in my next batch, not just a few drops as essential oil. But if that works, it’d be infinitely cheaper.

Can’t wait to make this one ! Thanks for making it so easy. I’ve made potions and lotions and things since hippy days and am always looking for something new to try. But, I tend to give up when it’s just too complicated. I can’t read 77 comments so my question is, in the first recipe the measurement of Myrrh oil says 1/4 oz. But, in the next one it says 0.15 oz. Steam distilled is not. Most are pressed though. The small amount in this soap that is used and then washed off should not cause any problems. If you were using lemon oil directly on the skin and leaving it on before going out in the sun, then I would be concerned.

You can use a combination of the two. I would run it though a lye calculator for sure. Make sure to adjust for the superfat content.

Excellent! Could this be done by melting the hard oils with the hot lye (not too hot, to avoid scorching) if so, what would be a good temp to keep it all at?

You really need to melt the oils before pouring the lye water into the oils. By pouring the lye over the oils you are not melting the lye crystals or the oils first and you’ll end up with a poorly mixed pot.

    Hello Kelly,
Newbie soapmaker here and stumbled upon this recipe. What is the reasoning behind the lye concentration (25%) thus meaning a lot of water?

The lye isn’t a percentage of the water, it is the amount needed to saponify the oils. Usually, water is 38-35% of the weight of the oils.

Hi, I tried this recipe last weekend and ended up with a sticky mess. Everything seemed fine until the next day, it wasn’t even close to being able to remove from the mold. There was oil oozing from the top (I think it’s oil) and it’s so soft. I should have checked the recipe with a lye calculator BEFORE making it but I did after, and the lye/water numbers came up different than yours. I’m sure I made some rookie mistakes somewhere, but I’m wondering if I can save it by rebatching it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

Lye calculators are often slightly different in numbers but not enough to make a big difference.
When there’s a separation of lye from the soap that’s usually because the oils were cold and/or there was a false trace, meaning the soap was not mixed enough before pouring into the mold. You can hand-mill by cutting up and putting in a slow cooker on the lowest setting. Cover with plastic wrap and allow to cook until all bubbled and melted. Scoop into a mold. The good thing about this is that it’s ready to use as soon as it cools and hardens.

As a face bar, a higher superfat means less stripping of sensitive facial skin. If you put the oils in a soap calculator or calculator it will give you the percentages.

Hello, thank you for your training. What is the appropriate amount of Superft for oily, dry and combination skin types ?? And how can I adjust that the soap does not make the skin too oily or dry ?????

It really depends on the recipe and the type of oils that you use. This will alter the superfat needed, depending on the person’s needs. If a soap is drying someone’s skin out, then a possible change in the oils is needed. You can also increase the superfat content.

I am about to try this recipe and have converted to grams (I am Canadian). The amounts of essential oils seem really large for this recipe! 0.25 oz = 7 grams of EO! I am assuming that this recipe makes one loaf (approx 2.2 lbs). that means 39.25 grams of essential oils! Do I really have that right?

That is correct. It’s a 3lb recipe. I typically use 0.35oz per pound of soap. This recipe has a little more than that, but still within normal parameters of soap making. You can back that down to 4 grams and still gain the benefits.

    Hello,
I am afraid making into a bar soap may not work for me. Can I just mix the oils together?
Would this be considered as a super-fatted soap? The essential oils together. I just want to avoid cooking with the lye or even cooking part of this recipe is that possible?

I have an Anti Aging essential oil blend that makes an excellent face oil. That sounds like it may be a better fit for you. https://simplelifemom.com/anti-aging-with-essential-oils/

    Good day
I made the anti aging face bar and been curing more than 6 weeks. When I wash my face with the soap I get a tingling feeling around my mouth? Why would this happen?

That may happen if the essential oils are too strong for your skin. The skin around the mouth is more sensitive. Make sure it’s not an allergic reaction. If not then at least you may be able to use it as a body bar. If not then definitely stop using. I’m not a physician so make Ute you check it with someone if it continues.

Recipes with butters and higher superfat content will have more moisture for your skin. Also beeswax keeps moisture next to the skin.
You can switch mango butter with Shea butter in recipes without changing anything else in the recipe.

    Hi Kelly!
Would love to add some rosehip seed oil to this as I find it very nourishing in my skin balm. At what stage would you add that in? Could I add it along with the essential oils? Would that help it from being used up totally in the saponification process? Also do you suggest replacing something else with it it; like take out half an oz of castor oil (or is another one better?), and swapping it for rosehip seed oil. Would that be enough, or too much? Is there a reason you didn’t add the rosehip seed oil here but it’s in the serum, i.e. does it not work well in soap?

If you just want to add a half ounce, you can add it with the essential oils. But I would add it as 4 ounces instead of the sweet almond oil for a stronger effect. The properties are still available in the soap even after saponification. We see this by changing ingredients and feeling a difference in the quality, effect, and feel.
