Cold sores can be so frustrating and embarrassing. If you get cold sores, then know that there are amazing natural remedies that stop it in its tracks and give you the help you need. This healing cold sore lip balm is easy to make and is great to have around for those times you need it.
Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex type 1 virus. It’s a virus that lives in your nerves and is something you live with your whole life once you are exposed. Sometimes when those nerves are irritated by stress, sun, or damage, the virus is triggered and you can begin to feel tingling and then pain as a break out occurs.
There are many creams that help to heal the sores that break out more quickly than being left alone, but there are natural elements that target the nerves and stop the cold sore from fully forming or from forming at all.
Lemon Balm for Cold Sores
Lemon balm is antiviral. It’s been shown in many studies to be as strong at fighting cold sores as top brand cold sore creams.
I have a close friend who deals with cold sores. Whenever she gets overly stressed she will break out on her lip. The break outs can be better or worse, but how fast you respond makes a difference in the size of the sore and the amount of pain.
We’ve used this cold sore lip balm many times and it’s been a wonderful help.
Lemon balm is easy to grow. If you grow your own, you’ll know that it grows as prolific as peppermint. The roots will crawl under the earth and come up feet away from your plant until you have it everywhere. If you have your own, you can break off a few leaves, chew them (or mash them in a mortar and pestle) and place the mashed leaves on the location where you feel the break out. This will slow or stop the break out!
If the thought of chewing or mashing leaves and placing them on your face doesn’t appeal to you, then this lip balm should be your next choice. It’s easy to make and glides on smoothly and invisibly so that you can carry on with your life.
To make this lip balm, you’ll need to first infuse oil with the lemon balm. This is a quick and easy step.
Lemon balm infusion
- Gather around 2 cups of lemon balm leaves. Crush them before using. You can do this with a mortar and pestle or use a spoon in a bowl to grind them down.
- Place lemon balm in a sauce pan and cover with 1 cup of olive oil or sweet almond oil.
- Heat the oil on low. You don’t want it to boil, you just want to heat it for 10 minutes. Stir as it heats.
- Turn the stove off and remove it from the burner. Allow it to cool to room temperature and then strain the leaves from the oil.
Keep this oil in a sealed jar to add directly to a cold sore and to use in the lip balm recipe below.
