I often get asked for more shampoo bar recipes. I have a few that are my favorite that I use for our hair type. Organic shampoo bars are easy to make. If you can follow directions to make a cake, then you can follow directions for making soap or shampoo from scratch. Don’t rely on melt and pour ingredients. Instead, make your own!

Whether you have dry, frizzy hair, oily hair that stays clean looking for only a few hours, or your hair is thinning, there are things you can do to improve your hair and scalp condition.

Conditioner bars or spray conditioners are a must have for most hair types when using shampoo bars because of our hard water. They are easy to make. The spray conditioner is a no brainer and easy to use for anyone with any hair type.

3 Organic Shampoo Bars
These shampoo bars are all great for most hair types. It’s just that some people need more of one thing than another. This may be caused by hard water, your diet, and other factors. Having the right kind of shampoo for your personal needs makes a big difference.
Organic Shampoo Bar for Oily Hair
These first organic shampoo bars are made for those with oily hair. It doesn’t dry your hair or scalp, but it does help to balance scalp oils and cleanse hair without making it frizz.
This recipe makes 2lbs or 8 four ounce shampoo bars.
Superfat Content: 5%
Ingredients:
- 8 ounces olive oil
- 7 ounces coconut oil
- 5 ounces avocado oil
- 5 ounces castor oil
- 8 ounces filtered water
- 3.5 ounces lye
- 0.50 ounce sweet orange essential oil
- 0.25 ounce rosemary essential oil
Directions:
- Combine the olive oil, coconut oil, avocado oil, and castor oil in a large steel pot. Heat over medium heat until all oils are melted. Remove from heat and allow to cool to 90 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Prepare 2lb soap mold by lining it if necessary.
- Using a face mask, gloves, and goggles, take weighed water outside. Weigh lye into a zip close bag and take it outside. Pour lye into the water and stir until dissolved, being careful not to breathe in the fumes that are given off for 1-2 minutes. Allow to cool to around 90 degrees Fahrenheit.
- When both lye water and oils are cooled, pour lye water into oil and blend with a stick blender on and off until it begins to thicken (come to trace).
- Add essential oils and blend well.
- Pour into the mold, scraping the sides pf the pot with a rubber spatula. Cover and insulate for 24 hours.
- Remove from mold and cut. Allow to cure for 3-6 weeks to harden.
Note:
**If you’d like to use a different set of essential oils, that’s fine. Use around 0.75 ounce of whatever combination that you want.
Organic Goat Milk Shampoo Bar for Dry Hair
This second shampoo bar recipe is for hair that dries out quickly and tends to frizz.
Adding milk to a shampoo bar, along with beeswax or other vegan wax, is a great way to help tame that frizz or tame those curls. It’s great for thick hair, helping it become more manageable.
This recipe makes 2lbs or 8 four ounce shampoo bars.
Superfat Content: 10%
Ingredients:
- 7 ounces coconut oil
- 6 ounces sweet almond oil
- 6 ounces castor oil
- 5 ounces beeswax
- 2 tablespoons powdered goat milk
- 7.7 ounces filtered water
- 2.9 ounces lye
- 0.25 ounces patchouli essential oil
- 0.50 ounces lavender essential oil
Directions:
- Combine the coconut oil, sweet almond oil, castor oil, and beeswax in a large steel pot. Heat over medium heat until all oils are melted. Remove from heat and allow to cool to 90 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Prepare 2lb soap mold by lining it if necessary.
- Using a face mask, gloves, and goggles, take weighed water outside. Weigh lye into a zip close bag and take it outside. Pour lye into the water and stir until dissolved, being careful not to breathe in the fumes that are given off for 1-2 minutes. Allow to cool to around 90 degrees Fahrenheit.

- Add powdered goat milk and essential oils and blend well.

Note:
**If you’d like to use a different set of essential oils, that’s fine. Use around 0.75 ounce of whatever combination that you want.
**If you are using fresh goat’s milk instead of powdered, use 7.7 ounces, but freeze it first to prevent the lye from scalding the milk fat.
Organic Shampoo Bar for All Hair Types
It has non-frizzing ingredients for those with dry or thick hair, but it doesn’t weigh hair down either. It’s cleansing, without stripping hair.
This recipe makes 2lbs or 8 four ounce shampoo bars.
Superfat Content: 5%
Ingredients:
- 6 ounces olive oil
- 6 ounces coconut oil
- 4 ounces apricot kernel oil
- 4 ounces castor oil
- 3 ounces shea butter
- 1 tablespoon dried nettle
- 7.4 ounces filtered water
- 3.2 ounces lye
- 0.25 ounces lemongrass essential oil
- 0.25 ounces lemon essential oil
- 0.25 ounces lavender essential oil
Directions:
- Combine the olive oil, coconut oil, apricot kernel oil, castor oil, and shea butter in a large steel pot. Heat over medium heat until all oils are melted. Remove from heat and allow to cool to 90 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Prepare 2lb soap mold by lining it if necessary.
- Using a face mask, gloves, and goggles, take weighed water outside. Weigh lye into a zip close bag and take it outside. Pour lye into the water and stir until dissolved, being careful not to breathe in the fumes that are given off for 1-2 minutes. Allow to cool to around 90 degrees Fahrenheit.
