Natural and homemade hair care products have been part of our lives for many years now. I recently looked at my most popular recipes for hair care. It’s great to see what people are looking for on a daily basis! I’m so glad that I can help you as you search for natural skin and hair care recipes.
More and more people are looking for natural ingredients. We are educating ourselves about how the constant influx of toxins onto our skin and into our bodies effects us over time. Products are more toxic and more highly processed than they’ve ever been, but people in general know so much more than they ever have before.
There is a desire to pull away from these toxins, to create something clean and pure, and to learn to take things into our own hands.
Why Homemade Hair Care Products?
Self Sufficiency
If you don’t know how to gather supplies and make something, then you should be ready to do without it. This is evident in how our culture and nation has taken a plummet since certain people have taken office, and how organizations have infiltrated our schools to teach them to hate capitalism.
We are digressing into a country where things are not always readily available. The first thing I notices is not being able to buy the brand I wanted and having to choose one I wasn’t as happy with. The second thing that I saw was prices rising.
Maybe it won’t get worse than this, but either way, being more self sufficient, being able to create your own items or do without is a wonderful skill. It brings confidence, strength, knowledge, and a marketable skill.
Frugality
It does often cost an initial amount to gather supplies. This initial purchase is definitely less than what you would pay over time! It’s actually one of the main reasons I started making soap. I purchased natural soap from a friend that helped various skin issues we were having. I knew I couldn’t keep buying her soap, so making my own was the only option. After buying the barest of supplies that I needed (I used a box for a soap mold and my hand mixer instead of a stick blender), I made my first batch.
Once you have supplies, you can often use the same ingredients for many items. Shea butter can be used in soap, lotion, and lip balm. Cocoa butter can as well!
Also, the health benefits that you gain save a TON of money in the end.
Health Benefits
You always know what you put in when you make it yourself.
Ingredients matter!
Your skin is the largest organ in your body and most ingredients that you put on your hair go into your scalp and onto you face and the rest of your body. Those ingredients cross into your blood, are transported to your liver, and must be dealt with by your body.
The more you do to minimize the amount of toxins you are encountering on a daily basis, the more chance you have of living a longer healthier life.

6) Conditioner Bar Recipe for All Hair Types
This is my second version of a conditioner bar. It’s actually very difficult to create a bar recipe without ingredients that I find questionable. And what’s the point if it’s possibly toxic?? This recipe is easier for those with thin or oily hair to use. It is moisturizing and balances pH to neutral (what you want after hard water and slightly basic shampoo bars). Get the recipe and learn more here.
7) Natural Pet Shampoo Recipes
This recipe can TOTALLY be used by people so I figured, why not include it? It’s in the top 10! Pet shampoo can be just as toxic as human shampoo bars. This recipe is gentle and gives a guide to what essential oils are safe to use with certain pets. Learn how to make a shampoo bar for your pet here.
8) Shampoo Recipe and 3 Herbal Conditioners
This article gives you a shampoo recipe and 3 ways to make herbal conditioners for your hair.
When you use a natural shampoo bar, you are using something that is slightly basic. This helps release dirt from the hair and the soap within the shampoo helps wash away excess oils. The conditioner then helps to neutralize the pH or the hair, which closes the shaft and creates that smooth feeling that we love. Get the recipes here.
9) Goat Milk and Honey Shampoo Recipe
Goat milk and honey are both wonderful on hair. I always recommend and milk and honey shampoo bar for those with thick unruly hair, but it’s also wonderful for all hair types. Both are very moisturizing. They don’t make oily hair more oily, but instead cleanse and create a beautiful calm head of shiny hair. I love this recipe and highly recommend it. 10) How to Dye Your Hair Naturally Step by Step
Yes, there is natural hair dye that is incredibly beautiful! I like to use henna to brighten my hair a little now that I’m getting more white and my color has dulled a bit. Some dyes are very strong and permanent. Others are light highlights that will wash out over time. Learn more about how to use natural dyes on your hair here.
11) Homemade Natural Hair Gel Recipe
Hair gel is another very easy recipe that is very effective. WE love this recipe and always use it before competitions and events that require perfect hair. It’s very simple and quick to make. Get the recipe here.
